In April 2010, I drove to Astoria, Oregon to live a childhood dream: to be a Goonie.
If you didn’t know it already, The Goonies movie is one of the greatest cultural creations of the 80′s. It has everything! Comedy, suspense, pirates, booty-traps (or booby traps), kids on a treasure hunt, pepperoni pizza, and Baby Ruth bars.
Really, unless they SOMEHOW added Batman, movies really don’t get any better than this!
I watched the movie religiously from the time I was 8. My greatest wish was that my dad had some secret map (from his time as a Marine) that would lead me to pirate treasure.
Unfortunately, after rummaging through my dad’s stuff for an hour, all I found were old communist relics (from his time in Berlin) and about $35 (which I was forced to count as pirate booty).
So, to make up for the fact that I wasn’t a Goonie, I decided to do the next best thing: walk in their footsteps.
